Amman Twestival 2009

On September 13th, more than 100 Twitters and bloggers met at the Royal Scientific Society after Sunset to discuss Entrepreneurship and Digital Social Media and it’s affect in the Jordanian society and the corporate sector.

The event was part of a worldwide event that took place in more than 200 cities around the world between September 12 -14. Cities like Amman, Beirut, Dubai, L.A, San Diego, Calgary, Sydney & Beijing hosted the event. This year’s event was sponsored by the leading Arab logistic company Aramex and the Queen Rania Center for Entrepreneurship and organized by fellow blogger Malik Shishtawi Foundation.

The event was a major success and had four speaking panels:

Razan Khatib from Syntax & Questler Click her Blog here

Zeid Nasser from MediaMe

Laith Al Qasem owner of Arabian Business Consultants for Development

Laith Zraikat from Jeeran

and was moderated by Mohamad Khawaja. The audience included Jordanian bloggers & Twitters, start-up companies as well as the CEO of Orange Jordan Mobile, representatives from the sponsors, Watwet and the media.

The agenda included topics like where the Social Media is heading in Jordan and what corporations can do to improve customer relations by using tools like Twitter & Facebook. For example one executive at a large company in Jordan wasn’t aware of the problems their clients are having until they communicated using Twitter. The acquisition of the Jordanian company Maktoob by Yahoo was also discussed, since the Jordan IT plays a leading role in the region. The Panel discussed the difficulty of monetizing the social media content since companies like Twitter are still not making money. The Panel also discussed that how by utilizing Twitter we can reach to a new level of executives and business owners that was not possible before, for example how I was able to discuss environmental issues with the Jordanian Minister of Environment on Twitter.

During the event, everyone was sending updates and live feedback on Twitter which was over projected behind the Panel podium. At the end of the event Aramex donated 5,000 JDs (US$7,052) to Al Aman Fund for Orphans in Jordan. I believe most people were very pleased to attend and interact with the local social media gurus in Jordan. It was also a nice opportunity to connect faces with Twitter names.

This is my interview with fellow blogger & friend Shalabieh

Sounds interesting! I would have attended if I only knew but I was away the whole day yesterday... Thanks for the update and the videos

Dubai's twestival was less organized and was more of a gathering where people went there just for the heck of it. Donations from attendees and the auctions went to Dubai Autism center, so regardless of how it went the important thing was that funds were raised for the kids.
